ThalAssist

For hospitals across India

Every transfusion, every test,
exactly on time.

ThalAssist gives hospital teams one shared view of every thalassemia patient — visit history, iron levels, chelation, and the surveillance checks that are easy to lose track of on paper.

About Us

Care that keeps up with the calendar.

Transfusion-dependent thalassemia requires lifelong, carefully coordinated care. Regular transfusions, iron-overload monitoring, chelation reviews and scheduled cardiac and liver assessments all need to happen at the right time. The exact timing varies according to each patient's condition and the treating team's plan.

Yet important information is often spread across paper registers, spreadsheets and separate hospital records. When a date or follow-up is difficult to track, an essential investigation or appointment may be delayed — not because anyone intended to miss it, but because the system depends on manual coordination.

ThalAssist is designed to help authorized hospital teams maintain a secure, longitudinal record for each patient, including transfusion history, iron-monitoring results, chelation reviews and scheduled follow-up assessments.

By making what is due, overdue and coming next easier to see, ThalAssist aims to support more organized and consistent thalassemia care.

Why I built ThalAssist

I'm Viraj Patra, and ThalAssist began at my family's dinner table. Both my parents are pediatricians, so I grew up hearing about the everyday challenges faced by children with thalassemia and the teams caring for them.

Regular transfusions, ferritin monitoring, scans and chelation reviews require careful, lifelong follow-up. Yet many hospitals still rely on paper files, spreadsheets and memory — making important dates and records easy to miss.

ThalAssist was created to help close that gap.

01

What I wanted to build

I wanted to create a platform designed specifically around the needs of thalassemia care, not a general hospital system with a thalassemia feature added later. ThalAssist aims to help healthcare teams:

Track what's due, overdue and coming next
Organized transfusion & treatment records
Coordinate follow-ups & investigations
Reduce dependence on paper
More consistent care for every patient

The goal is to make the platform simple enough for nurses to use, reliable enough for doctors to trust, and helpful enough to ensure that important follow-ups are not quietly missed.

02

What I learned

I am not a doctor. I built ThalAssist by listening to my parents, healthcare professionals and hospital teams describe the challenges they face every week. Their experiences continue to guide the platform — each feature begins with a real conversation about how thalassemia care is delivered and where technology can provide meaningful support.

Thalassemia is manageable when care is consistent. Patients can grow up, study, work and lead fulfilling lives. My vision is for ThalAssist to help ensure that no important follow-up is left to memory, regardless of which hospital a patient visits. That is why ThalAssist exists.

A Community-Centred Project

ThalAssist is a student-led social-impact project created to support the thalassemia community. Its purpose is to explore how thoughtful technology can help patients, families and healthcare teams manage the lifelong demands of thalassemia care more effectively.

Understanding Thalassemia

A genetic condition. A lifelong rhythm of care.

Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder. It is not caused by anything a parent did, and it is not contagious. With consistent, individualized care, many people with thalassemia grow up, study, work and lead active, fulfilling lives.

That care depends on keeping track of many important appointments, investigations and treatments over time.

What it is

In thalassemia, the body does not produce enough healthy haemoglobin and red blood cells. The condition is present from birth and is often identified during infancy or early childhood through blood tests.

Why regular transfusions matter

People with transfusion-dependent thalassemia may require regular red-cell transfusions, often every two to four weeks. The timing and amount are determined by the treating haematology team. Regular transfusions help manage severe anaemia and support growth, development and daily activities.

Why monitoring matters

Repeated transfusions can gradually cause iron to build up in the body. Without appropriate monitoring and treatment, excess iron can affect organs such as the heart and liver. Ferritin testing, chelation reviews and periodic liver and cardiac assessments help the clinical team monitor this risk. The frequency of each assessment depends on the individual patient's age, treatment and results.

The role of ThalAssist

ThalAssist is designed to help patients, families and healthcare teams keep track of transfusions, investigations, appointments and follow-up care — so that important next steps are easier to see and less likely to be missed.

ThalAssist supports care coordination. It does not diagnose conditions, prescribe treatment, or replace advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

For Hospitals

A system built around transfusion-clinic workflows.

ThalAssist is designed specifically for transfusion-dependent thalassemia care, not as a general hospital EMR with a thalassemia form added later. It helps clinical teams organize patient records, plan transfusion visits and keep track of investigations and follow-up care.

Structured patient records

Maintain a longitudinal patient profile with transfusion history, treatment information, investigations, appointments and clinically relevant notes in one secure location.

Day-wise transfusion planner

View patients due for transfusion on a selected day or date range — helping clinics anticipate workload, organize appointments and identify upcoming gaps in scheduling.

Configurable reminders

Automated seven-day and one-day reminders for upcoming transfusion appointments — schedules adjustable to hospital policy and individual patient requirements.

Chelation & investigation alerts

Configurable reminders for ferritin testing, chelation reviews, cardiac and liver assessments, infection screening and other follow-up — timing set by the treating team.

Transfusion documentation

Record transfusion date, units or volume administered, pre-transfusion haemoglobin, reactions and relevant blood-bank information — supporting safer, more consistent follow-up.

Start the Conversation No cost or commitment to talk it through.
Safety & Privacy

Handled with the same care as the people it serves.

ThalAssist deals with sensitive health and contact information. Privacy and safety are treated as requirements from day one, not something added later — for patients, hospitals and donors alike.

Clinical Guidance & Limitations

ThalAssist is being developed with input from healthcare professionals. Its reminders, records and communication tools are intended to support care coordination. They do not provide a diagnosis, prescribe treatment, or determine transfusion eligibility.

Donor Coordination Notice

Donor information displayed on ThalAssist is for coordination purposes only. Blood-group compatibility, donor eligibility, infection screening and final approval must be confirmed by an authorized blood bank or hospital.

What we do to protect your information

Consent before collecting information
Minimal data collection
Encryption in transit & at rest
Role-based access control
No public display of patient details
No unrestricted donor database
Audit trail for record changes
Secure backup & recovery
Clear data-retention policy
A designated privacy & security contact

Where things stand today

ThalAssist is under active development. Before any real patient data is used, the platform will undergo formal review by qualified legal, cybersecurity and healthcare professionals. Until that review is complete, development and testing rely on dummy data, anonymized records, simulated donor profiles and test accounts — not real patient reports or identifiable information.
